Emmanuel Gazmey Santiago, better known by his stage name Anuel AA, is a Puerto Rican rapper and singer whose real name is Emmanuel Gazmey Santiago. Many people regard Anuel to be the founder of the Latin trap reggaeton music genre. Despite being imprisoned in 2016 for being in possession of an illegal firearm, Anuel has managed to build a name for himself in the music world. He was named New Artist of the Year at the Billboard Latin Music Awards in 2019.

Anuel AA was born on November 26, 1992, in Carolina, Puerto Rico. His father, Jose Gazmey, was a music industry vice president at Sony Music Entertainment, while his mother, Nilda Santiago, was a stay-at-home mom. His father influenced him greatly in his decision to pursue a career in music. He used to spend a lot of time with Tempo, a songwriter and rapper, when he was younger.

Anuel AA was a student at Colegio Maria Auxiliadora, a Catholic school in Carolina. He had been a rebellious child since he was a child, and as he became more immersed in music, he dropped out of school. He also chose not to attend college in order to concentrate on his music career. Anuel was detained on April 3, 2016, along with three other people, and they were accused with illegally possessing firearms. He was sentenced to 30 months in prison. Following his incarceration, the #FreeAnuel movement went viral, as most of his followers were unable to cope with the situation.

During this time, the rapper continued to release music from prison, where he was able to record by phone. J Balvin, Bad Bunny, and Nicky Jam were among the acts with whom he collaborated. He has also gotten into fights with other musicians such as Ivy Queen and Cosculluela.
