 Early Life  and Biography

Cheslie Kryst was born in Jackson, Michigan, on April 28, 1991, to a Polish American father named Rodney Kryst and an African American mother named April Simpkins. At the time of her death, she was 30 years old. David Simpkins, Cheslie’s mother and stepfather, raised her. Asa Kryst, Chandler Kryst, Jet Simpkins, and Brooklyn Simpkins are her four brothers, and Page Kryst is her sister. Cheslie, Page, Asa, Chandler, and their parents moved from Michigan to Charlotte, North Carolina, then Rock Hill, South Carolina, then Fort Mill, South Carolina.

She was crowned Miss Freshman at Northwestern High School in Rock Hill. She received her diploma from Fort Mill High School in Fort Mill, South Carolina, in 2009. Her title was Miss Fort Mill High School. She won the 1L Trial Bar Competition Finals in 2013 and graduated from the University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business in Columbia, South Carolina, with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and human resource management. During her time at university, she was a track and field athlete.

  • Kryst was admitted to the North Carolina and South Carolina bars and began his legal career at Poyner Spruill LLP, where he focused on complex civil litigation. She has done pro bono work for low-level drug offenders, including working with Brittany K. Barnett of the Buried Alive Project to free a client who was sentenced to life in prison.

  • Kryst started her pageant career as a kid, winning Miss Freshman at Northwestern High School in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and then Miss Fort Mill High School in Fort Mill, South Carolina. She returned to pageantry after a long sabbatical, competing in two Miss North Carolina pageants, finishing in the top ten on her first attempt and first runner-up on her second.

  • In 2016, Kryst competed in Miss North Carolina USA 2017 and placed fourth runner-up. She returned the following year and placed in the top ten, before being named Miss Metrolina in Miss North Carolina USA 2019. Because the departing titleholder, Caelynn Miller-Keyes, was unable to attend due to filming for season 23 of The Bachelor, she was crowned by Kaaviya Sambasivam, Miss North Carolina Teen USA 2018.
  • With her triumph, 2019 became the first year in which women of African descent won all four major US-based pageants; other winners included Zozibini Tunzi of South Africa (as Miss Universe 2019), Nia Franklin (as Miss America 2019), and Kaleigh Garris (as Miss America 2019). (as Miss Teen USA 2019). She previously held the title of Miss North Carolina USA 2019, making her the third woman from the state to win Miss USA.
  • For her work as an Extra journalist in New York, Kryst was nominated for Outstanding Entertainment News Program at the 47th Daytime Emmy Awards in 2020. She was nominated for the same award the following year at the 48th Daytime Emmy Awards.
    Death of Cheslie Kryst

On January 30, 2022, Kryst died in New York City after falling from her 60-story high-rise apartment building in Midtown Manhattan. Her mother is alleged to have received a suicide note and her belongings.
